OUR MISSION STATEMENT
The CWC - Concerned Walkerton Citizens - seek intervener status in the Public Inquiry probing the
Walkerton E. coli outbreak. We require direct input into the terms of reference for the inquiry. We
believe our full participation is vital to restore the confidence of all citizens of Ontario in the
government's ability to ensure the safety of our drinking water supply.
Update:
On July 31, 2001, CWC made a presentation to the Commissioner, Justice Dennis O'Connor at the Inquiry Town Hall Meeting. While final arguments on behalf of CWC will be made by CELA (Canadian Environmental Law Association) later in August, it was felt that it would be of benefit to outline some of the ongoing fears which the citizens of Walkerton continue to face regarding future health risks and the concerns about water. Additionally, CWC outlined key recommendations which they would likeJustice O'Connor to place in his report, namely, A Safe Drinking Act and the continued protection for public control of water resources and operation. We also strongly urge the Inquiry to complete the needed tracer testing for Well 7 in order to both determine the source of contamination and provide for the future security of our water. Walkerton's water tragedy happened and there is nothing that can be done to erase the pain and suffering, but what can be accomplished is to learn from the mistakes that were made here and to ensure that this never happens again in any other community. CWC will to lobby to see that the necessary changes are made by government at all levels to ensure the safety of all citizens of Walkerton and Ontario.
